Report from the Honorary President

In the Association’s last annual report, I took the opportunity to step down as CEO of eco.
For me, the year 2024 was all about quantum technology – a key technology in which we are symbolically still in the age of the steam engine. The first quantum computers and promising fields of application already exist – for example, in logistics, medicine, sensor technology and telecommunications. However, decisive developments are still lacking, particularly in the area of software. If we stay with the image of the steam engine, we are currently still working with coal here – so the greatest potential still lies ahead of us.
The topic of the eco event “Quantum Technology – The Next Stage of the Digital Revolution” in November focused on how the development and application of quantum technology can be specifically promoted in Germany and how it can contribute to the country’s global competitiveness.
As an association, we see it as our task to actively accompany and promote this process. We will continue to provide a platform for exchange, knowledge transfer and cooperation in the future. Our goal is to accelerate innovation by networking all relevant stakeholders from science, business and politics and to strengthen Germany as a quantum location in a sustainable manner. Only a holistic approach will enable us to harness the potential of quantum technology to solve complex global challenges. I also spoke about this in an interview and in the eco podcast “Das Ohr am Netz” (“An Ear to the Internet”).
The level of interest in the technology is also reflected in a recent eco survey: over a quarter of those surveyed believe that quantum technology will have a significant impact on their industry. We will see the results of this first phase of quantum computing within the next ten years – an exciting journey that began around a century ago with the discovery of quantum physics.
Looking ahead to the 100th anniversary of quantum technology in 2025, I am convinced that this technology will fundamentally change our understanding of computer science and make a significant contribution to solving global challenges. I will continue to follow this development with great interest.
