DE-CIX in the Year 2024
Enormous growth in global customer capacity, peak traffic and connected networks
DE-CIX can look back on another successful financial year. As the world’s leading operator of data centre and carrier-neutral Internet Exchanges (IXs) and provider of peering services, the company now has a presence in 60 metropolitan regions. Growth in all areas of the company reflects the strategic approach of expanding and further developing existing locations:
- Global revenue for all divisions rose by 5.2 million (+8.3 per cent) to 68.6 million Euro in 2024.
- Revenue from international activities increased by 11.7 per cent compared to 2023 and accounted for 25.8 per cent of total revenue in 2024.
- In addition, the number of connected networks across the entire ecosystem grew to over 4,000 (+10 per cent). Connected global customer capacity rose to 170 Terabits (+20 per cent). Global peering data throughput at peak times reached nearly 25 Terabits per second (Tbit/s) at the end of the year – an increase of 11 per cent compared to 2023.
- In addition, the networks connected to DE-CIX’s global locations exchanged more than 68 Exabytes of traffic in 2024 (+15 per cent).
Among the most outstanding locations in 2024 were the new North American IXs: DE-CIX Phoenix – which saw a 45 per cent growth in connected networks and an increase in peak traffic of almost 500 per cent – and DE-CIX Chicago, with customer growth of almost 30 per cent to over 60 connected networks and more than 200 per cent in peak traffic.
The UAE-IX in Dubai recorded an 80 per cent increase in connected customer capacity and a 40 per cent increase in peak traffic. With over 800 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s), the location ended the year as the largest IX in the Middle East. In the Singapore/Johor Bahru metropolitan area, connected customer capacity rose by almost 70 per cent to over 2 Terabits (Tbit/s). Across the Asian ecosystem, capacity increased by almost 150 per cent and the number of connected networks by 240 per cent.
DE-CIX expands reach with new locations
In addition, five new Internet exchanges were put into operation: Penang IX in Malaysia, DE-CIX Jakarta in Indonesia, Bengaluru in India, PIE Karachi in Pakistan, and IRAQ-IXP in Baghdad (the latter two are operated by DE-CIX under the DE-CIX-as-a-Service model). Four additional Internet exchanges were technically prepared for launch: DE-CIX Mexico, DE-CIX Houston, DE-CIX Sao Paulo and DE-CIX Rio de Janeiro. These activities underscore the importance of strategic expansion for the company.
Furthermore, existing locations were technically upgraded and the ecosystem expanded to include additional data centres around the globe, including the geographical expansion of the three Internet exchanges DE-CIX Chicago, DE-CIX Dallas and DE-CIX New York.
Regional highlights at a glance
Highlights in Europe included a new data throughput record of 18.1 Terabits per second at DE-CIX Frankfurt, strong growth of the Cloud Exchange in Amsterdam in its first year of operation, and an increase in customer capacity at DE-CIX Marseille of more than 25 per cent, alongside a 40 per cent increase in peak traffic.
The largest IX in Portugal, DE-CIX Lisbon, celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2024. To mark the occasion, DE-CIX published a study entitled “Portugal: A Global Interconnection Hub, a Gateway to Europe, a Gateway to the World”, which analyses how Portugal has developed into a strategic hub for digital connectivity.
Also in autumn, DE-CIX initiated and organised a new conference in Lisbon. The Atlantic Convergence focuses on transatlantic infrastructure and connectivity issues and brought together more than 500 participants from 300 different companies. Due to its great success, a further conference is now planned for October 2025.

Highlights in North America included strong growth in the US, with DE-CIX Dallas recording a 25 per cent increase in customer bandwidth and 50 per cent in peak traffic. A particular highlight was the 10th anniversary of DE-CIX New York, which the company celebrated in June 2024. A new study was published to mark the anniversary: “Navigating the Digital Future: Neutral Internet Exchanges as Catalysts for Ecosystem Growth”. This highlights how important data centre and carrier-neutral Internet exchanges already are for the US market today.
The IXs in Africa (Kinshasa and Lagos, both operated by DE-CIX for various partners) recorded an increase in connected networks of almost 60 per cent. In the Middle East, DE-CIX Istanbul saw network growth of almost 20 per cent. In India, the total capacity of connected customers exceeded 11 Terabits for the first time. In addition, a new location was opened in Bengaluru during the course of the year. The situation was no different in Southeast Asia, where the capacity of connected customers rose by 60 per cent and the number of networks grew by almost 15 per cent. In Asia, the distributed DE-CIX Asia Interconnection Platform ended the year with over 160 connected networks.

The 10th anniversary of DE-CIX New York was celebrated in June 2024.
In order to meet the requirements of the changing interconnection landscape, DE-CIX expanded and restructured its successful partner programme in 2024. Since then, the company has also been supporting managed service providers, system integrators and IT consultancies. This step makes DE-CIX the world’s first data centre and carrier-neutral Internet Exchange operator to pursue such an approach.
